Antique Dated 1889 Hand-Painted Russian Orthodox Icon – The Mandylion (Not Made by Hands) with 84 Silver and Enameled Jeweled Riza
Fine antique hand-painted Russian Orthodox icon dated 1889, depicting the Holy Mandylion (the Holy Image “Not Made by Hands” of Christ) crowned with the Crown of Thorns. According to sacred tradition, this miraculous likeness was imprinted when Christ pressed a cloth to His face to heal King Abgar of Edessa of his illness. On this specific variant, the traditional miraculous cloth is represented by the elaborately styled metallic drapery forming the background riza, complete with the two folds or ends hanging down on each side. The icon features an ornate riza crafted from stamped 84 silver, adorned with vibrant polychrome cloisonné enamelwork and gemstone-like accents.
Hand-painted on a traditional wood panel, enclosed in an 84 silver and enameled metal riza. In good condition.
A rare, historically documented, and spiritually striking collector’s item of sacred religious art.
