Antique Dated 1811 Hand-Painted Russian Orthodox Icon – The Mandylion (Not Made by Hands) with 84 Silver and Gold-Plated Riza, Signed “E.T”
Fine antique hand-painted Russian Orthodox icon dated 1811, depicting the Holy Mandylion (the Holy Image “Not Made by Hands” of Christ), bearing the traditional upper Cyrillic border inscription “НЕРУКОТВОРНЫИ ОБРАЗЬ ГДА НАШЕГО IИСА ХРСТА” (The Not-Made-by-Hands Image of Our Lord Jesus Christ). According to sacred tradition, this miraculous likeness was imprinted when Christ pressed a cloth to His face to heal King Abgar of Edessa of his illness. The icon features a remarkable protruding halo and oklad covered in stamped 84 silver with gold-plated accents, and is signed by the master maker “E.T”.
In good condition considering its age, showing authentic age-related wear.
Hand-painted on a traditional wood panel, enclosed in an 84 silver and gold-plated metal riza.
